Day 8: Wollondibby Creek

Updated: Feb 12, 2023

22/11/22 - Distance: 30km

Yet another early 6am start. An easy all road walking today. Predominately through sheep and cattle country. Lots of workers around and shearers at work. Lots of shawn skinny lloking sheep. Weather is very windy and chilly. Speaking with some of the locals at the pub last night it is the wettest it has every been in Delegate which is usually dry. I wonder about how my crossing of the snowy river will be (if possible at all) in 4 days or so time, will I find myself back at delegate pub being unable to cross the snowy river?.

Walking along the Corrowong Rd there is a lot of road kill, and also a lot of bullet casings. The route here follows through undulating hills north west to the Wollondilly River. Which it then follws to its head at Mcguigans Gap then down a ridge beside the Merambego Creek before heading West over a slightly hidden pass between steep terrain over to Byadobo Creek. They have been doing repairs on the old road ahead due to washouts with recent rainfall and they happened to get a large excavator bogged and had to retrieve it with another larger tractor. Lamb fettucine for dinner with a side of miso soup and chocolate mousse for dessert.

I setup camp in a grassy field beside the flowing Wollondibby creek near the junction of Corrowong Rd and Walkers Rd. Too windy for a fire tonight so I resort to cooking using the stove. I had placed a food and water drop here days earlier as I had anticipated it to be dry from here to the snowy. Definitely not the case and its in fact the wettest the area has every been, apparently. All the creeks had flowing water in them, albeit some brown due to runoff.
